Project Overview


Burnley Borough Council commissioned Deakin’s Group to refurbish the health suite facilities at St Peter’s Leisure Centre, including the sauna, steam room, and associated shower areas.


The project aimed to modernise ageing facilities, improve durability in high-moisture environments, and enhance the overall user experience, all while maintaining a safe and operational leisure centre for the public.


Scope Of Work


The refurbishment encompassed a complete strip-out and renewal of the existing health suite facilities, delivering a modern, high-quality environment for public use:


Core Works:

  • Removal of the existing sauna, steam room, and shower finishes

  • Installation of new wall build-ups, including metal framing, marine ply, cement boards, and waterproof tanking systems

  • Renewal of tiled finishes, grout, and moisture-resistant decorations

  • Full refurbishment of shower areas, including new enclosures, fittings, and drainage systems

  • Specialist installation of new sauna and steam room facilities, including seating, lighting, ventilation, and glazed access systems


Additional Improvement Works:

  • Internal decoration upgrades to the surrounding areas

  • Access control enhancements for improved safety and user management

  • Fire suppression system upgrades, coordinated with specialist contractors


Project Delivery


Completed within a constrained four-week programme, the project required careful sequencing of multiple trades and specialist subcontractors within an operational leisure centre.


Key delivery considerations included:


  • Maintaining safe access and segregation within live areas

  • Protection of existing finishes and adjacent facilities

  • Coordinated scheduling of enabling works and specialist installations

  • Close collaboration with nominated contractors and supplier-led installations

High-quality finishes and long-term durability were a central focus, particularly in wet-area environments exposed to intensive public use:


  • Integrated waterproofing systems to ensure long-lasting performance

  • Close coordination with specialist supplier Anapos Ltd to align preparatory works with sauna and steam room installations

  • Management of fire suppression system modifications to meet compliance requirements

  • Consistent quality control across all health suites and wet-area works


Handover


The project concluded with a full site clean and reinstatement of all areas. Comprehensive health and safety documentation and O&M manuals were provided. All systems, including sauna and steam room installations, were fully tested, commissioned, and handed over in collaboration with the client and specialist contractors.


Conclusion


The St Peter’s Leisure Centre health suite refurbishment was successfully delivered on time and within budget. The project transformed ageing facilities into a modern, durable, and high-quality environment suitable for intensive public use.
